Hi, I'm Heidi, and I was drinking too much for too long.
For most of my adult life, I've been what one might call, "a drinker." Wine with dinner, cocktails on the weekends, beers after mountain biking, whiskey after skiing. There was almost always an occasion to pour a drink. As I got older, I started to become more conscious of my drinking habits and would take time off from the bottle from time to time, just to prove to myself that I could. But it was becoming more difficult to stop or even to moderate. I knew alcohol was bad for me and I knew I felt bad. And then I felt worse. And worse. Until one very long horrible mental-health day, I just stopped. I don't feel the urge to drink, I'm not struggling to not drink, and I don't feel the need to join a support group (sorry!). I really just don't want to drink.
This is SUCH a weird feeling!
But it's a wonderful feeling. I feel happy and healthy and rested and full of energy.
Because there was a lot of ritual around my drinking, I wanted to replace the cocktails with something that felt equally special. The feeling of a chilled coupe glass in my hand or a giant ice cube in a crystal rocks glass felt right and familiar. Sipping something fruity from a straw would not satisfy my needs. So, I started experimenting.
I use ingredients and recipes in an effort to mimic my favorite cocktails, but I’m quickly discovering other flavors that taste just as sophisticated as a cocktail. (In other words, I stay away from fruity, sweet drinks that my 10-year-old daughter would love).
That’s how I got here. Thanks for visiting and embarking on this mocktail journey with me. I hope you find some recipes you love!
